Decorating solutions are tailored to each client’s unique style. Finding inspiration to get your home decorating project started can come from so many different places. One of my favourite ways to get the project started, is to find that perfect piece of furniture. My source of inspiration, for this renovated family room, was the ever fabulous Delano chest from Hooker Furniture. I wanted to create a formal yet comfortable space, with a refined rustic feel. The Delano chest was just what we needed, it is the focal piece in the room and offers a wonderful storage solution for the board games this family enjoy so much. The room came together with great ease, using the warm colors of the Delano chest. A neutral palette of soft grey, beiges and creams, blanket the room in serenity. Now at the end of their crazy busy days, this family of 5 can slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Thanks again Hooker Furniture for constantly being a source for design inspiration.
With the Holiday season fast approaching many of you are thinking of all the entertaining and hosting of family diners in your future. You are probably asking yourself where is everyone going to sit? Well it’s normal for the kitchen island to be the source of the add on extra sitting when the dining table just doesn’t seat all your guests. I’ve been selling furniture for a long time, and over the years can’t help but notice there is always a confusion on what height of stool you really need. Use this is a guideline, if you measure from the floor up, and your counter top height is approximately 36″ then you need a 24″ counter height stool. If you measure from the ground up and your counter top height is approximately 42″ then you need a 30″ bar stool. Now you will ask yourself do you want swivel or not. That is a personal choice, if you are going to use swivel keep in mind who and how will it be used. Swivel stools sometimes weigh a lot so moving them in and out of place can be difficult for some people. Also if the swivel stools have a back and you have counter tops that can get damaged, well let’s just say I had a client whose teenagers kept swivelling the stools and hitting the counters, so who and how your counter stools are being used is important.Back or no back? Let’s face it the kitchen island is just a great place to hang out. Some people think a back provides extra comfort, personally I’m Ok either way as long as I’m sipping on a great glass of wine, and enjoying the company of family and friends. If the overhang of your kitchen island is not very deep, or if your island is where there is a lot of traffic flow, then a stool with no back that easily tuck under the counter is a great idea. There is no doubt in your hunt for the perfect counter or bar stool you are going to see a wide range of prices. So many things will be part of your decision. I recently worked with a client, who when I first suggested a kitchen counter stool that was $1100 per stool, they nearly choked saying”I am not paying that for a kitchen stool”. When I work on design projects I carefully pick and choose where the client should or should not spend a little extra, for this client the kitchen island was huge, in the centre of the home, and a very important gathering point for their lifestyle. So we spent the extra, bought the $1100 stools and the results are amazing.Kitchen islands, bars, casual dining , whatever you need a counter or bar stool for ,rest assured you will find what you are looking for. If you need something with a cottage feel, or does your taste say industrial and modern, there are endless options from some pretty fabulous furniture suppliers. If you are overwhelmed by the choice and just want a little advice do not hesitate to contact me, I’ll be happy to help.
Finally I am back from our fabulous Italy vacation. I read along time ago that once you travel to Italy once, it then becomes your passion. I have been going every year for the past 10 years, and I couldn’t agree more! I especially love when I can combine my two passions, decorating and Italy. I must admit, even when I am on vacation I go in to every furniture and home decor store I find. The Italians just have a way with fashion, and I can’t help but notice, simplicity seems to work best. Designing this dining room for my Burlington client I knew simplicity would be the way to go. Dining room table and chairs are solid wood, Canadian made by Bermex, the cabinet is from the always fabulous Hooker Furniture. The fabric I selected for the drapes is a simple white light weight fabric with just enough bling in the silver starburst pattern, to bring out the bling in the fixtures. Not a lot of fuss in extra furniture pieces, clean and simple works best. I loved how the custom drapes added the elegant finishing touch!!

First let me start by saying I am working on a few things on my site. I am changing the “about” page and the “services” page. I have been extremely busy lately with house calls and especially custom drapes, so I guess it’s about time I let all of you know these are services I offer. It will take me a couple of days to update this information, as technology is not my strong suit.
So now let’s discuss windows. A very important part of the finishing touches to your home. Yes there is an endless supply of ready made drapes out there, my work is focused on the custom projects. I have always had a passion for gorgeous fabrics, and I see the difference with clients when their windows drapes are done properly. What a difference wonderful windows will make to your home. Yes I know I say it often, but I can’t help myself, I really do love the furniture industry. And there is no better time of year for furniture than Highpoint Market. The furniture manufacturers launch their newest collections, the showrooms are done to perfection and all who attend are motivated and ready to work. This year was truly a delight, with the new launch from Rachael Ray, case goods by Legacy and upholstery by Craft Master. Just like her personality, bright , cheery and full of fun and style, I look forward to seeing the new Rachel Ray product in the local furniture stores. So much good to see from so many different suppliers. This is one time I will say the picture is worth 1000 words, so I’ll stop typing and just let you comb through a small sample of the inspiring showrooms. Have fun and enjoy!!
It’s a fact, blue is my favourite colour. Not just in what I wear, but I love to use it as an accent for client’s when selecting furniture and accessories for their homes. Face it, blue gives a feeling of security, it is a constant in our lives and creates desirable images, like blue sky on a clear day and the deep blue of the ocean. So can you image how thrilled I am to see the new introductions from the Cynthia Rowley Collection, by Hooker furniture. This fashion forward collection is going to be a treat for me to work with, seriously puts me in my happy place. Dramatic design to each piece will surely be the focus in any room, easily adapting to a variety of personal styles and tastes. Do you live in a condo in the centre of the hustle and bustle of the city, or perhaps your view is the serenity of a waterfront lot, or maybe you’re like me and live in a quiet neighbourhood with the Niagara Escarpment as my view. No matter what your surroundings you will surely be smitten by this fabulous collection of furniture .
Oh and for any of you NCAA basketball fans, remember they are called the Duke “Blue” Devils.
You know the old saying “less is more” well I must admit that when selecting furniture it really does work. When working with a smaller room space, use furniture with simple lines, not a lot of bulk, and don’t over crowd. This room scene from Thomasville Furniture shows how the right mix of fabrics, textures and shapes creates loads of visual interest, while keeping your room open and airy. The fabric sectional, done in a neutral color has fabulous details, nice simple rolled arm with added pizzaz in the nail trim detailing. A round leather tufted ottoman provides another texture in the room, allows you to sit back and put your feet up, and in a crowd is great for extra seating. Completing the look, the occasional tables are the perfect mix of wood and metal with an open base and square lines to compliment the round and curved lines of the sectional and ottoman. Elements of style, perfect for a smaller space. Thomasville Furniture is a fabulous , quality driven manufacturer with an amazing selection of fabrics to choose from. If you need assistance with a room planner to see which components will fit in your space, contact me and we’ll work together on creating your dream room, email@example.com, and remember shop local and support your local retailer.

So it’s time to downsize, the decision alone is a tough one to make. Time to leave the 4000 sq ft home you raised your family in, let go of the “stuff” you have collected over the years, and if you’re anything like me, maybe even time to get rid of the bins of lego…OK so I’m not quite ready to do that yet. I’ve been doing this a really long time, so I know what it’s like to watch all these young families buying their large homes and then setting out to buy furniture to fill all this space. In a world of oversize furniture, it does sometimes feel like downsizing may prove to be difficult. But not so, first there are some pretty fabulous builders out there offering some amazing floor plans to suit your new lifestyle. Floor plans and furniture is where I can certainly help, just because we’re getting a bit older and downsizing doesn’t mean we still don’t love fashion and style. There are plenty of superior furniture manufacturers catering to exactly this market, smaller framed pieces that don’t over power the space yet still big on style. I can’t say it enough, get a floor plan done, knowing what will fit in your space before you set out shopping will prove to be a huge help. If you have the plans from your builder, send them to me, we can work right from the plans. Let’s find what fits, what your style is, what you are comfortable in , then comes the fun part, colors and fabrics and yes it is fun! Downsizing is a great stage in life, let’s work together and eliminate the stress of furniture shopping.
I figure today is a great time to reflect on how fortunate I am to be able to do what I love everyday. For quite a few years I have been involved in furniture retail, sales and management, which I truly did enjoy. In July I retired from furniture retail, but definitely not from the furniture industry, I love it way too much to ever leave this industry. I am constantly working with clients to find them the furniture pieces that reflect their style and fill their homes with timeless quality pieces of furniture. I work with many fabulous local retailers, I specifically look for retailers who are completely dedicated to a quality customer service experience, from time of purchase to delivery day. My website provides a list of these fabulous local retailers as well as a list of the inspirational and trend setting suppliers that have supported me so graciously in my mission to provide you with a resource guide for retailers and suppliers. I will continue to grow my lists of retailers and suppliers and it has been so much fun hearing from all of you. I am always excited to answer your decorating & furniture questions. I get great pleasure out of sharing my extensive knowledge of furniture, who makes it and where to buy it, was the reason I started Casa Castelli and will continue to grow it. The picture here is from FFDM, Biltmore Collection, a fabulous furniture manufacturer with a variety of collections and styles available. In the GTA, I do have my favourite retailers for FFDM, they provide competitive pricing and amazing service, two things I insist on for my clients. I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, be safe and enjoy your time with family and friends.
I have so many great things to say about this absolutely stylistically perfect room scene from CRLaine Furniture. Avoiding predictability their combination of bold patterns exercises the eyes to create an energetic living space. The furniture arrangement is simple and straightforward yet the mixture of color, texture and pattern is eye-catching in unexpected ways. The playful design of the sofa, the bold color on the toss pillows and the animal print on the chairs pull together to radiate happiness. One of my favourite things about CRLaine is their no fear policy when it comes to playing with color. Of course my other favourite thing is quality, quality, quality! Shown above is the Colchester Sofa, 8 way hand tied , creating an uber comfy long lasting sofa, and at 87.5″L X 37D X 39H it is easy to fit in most living spaces. The Elle chair (shown in the leopard print) is new to CRLaine, it has wonderful optional finishes on the arms, is 30″W x 36″D X 33.5″H and I must say makes quite a statement as shown. The Pierce wing chair offers a modern edge to the space with it’s clean straight lines, which are complemented by the plaid fabric, 29″W x 33″D x 48″H, perfectly proportioned for the room. The Terrance ottoman is also new to CRLaine, has optional sizes to choose from and is available in both leather and fabric making it the perfect finishing touch to the room, put your feet up or put your drink down a cocktail ottoman is always a good choice. So just want to say thanks to CRLaine for showing us to be brave, have some fun with your fabric choices the results will make you smile!!! If you have any questions on where this fabulous furniture is available in the G.T.A just let me know I will be happy to send you to your local retailer.
I am always thrilled when a client wants to support our Great Canadian Suppliers. We in the furniture industry are very fortunate to have so many wonderful Canadian products available to us. But first be very specific, if you are out furniture shopping on what you are asking for, a Canadian supplier of furniture does not always mean made in Canada. If it is important to you to have it made in Canada then tell your sales associate exactly that, if all you ask for is a Canadian supplier, then it says something completely different. In my 28 years of selling furniture I will say this, any of the Canadian suppliers I have dealt with have been fantastic. The sofa in this photo is from Decor-Rest, a well known, excellent quality manufacturer since 1972, and their upholstery is made in North America. Decor-Rest has a wide selection of products and styles to choose from, with a fashion forward selection of fabrics. The chair is from Brentwood, again an excellent Canadian supplier, and also made in Canada. Comfort, style, durability all part of the selections available from Brentwood. The bedroom set and dining room set are again Canadian suppliers, Canadian made and both offer solid wood products. The dining room is Bermex, with so many options it is impossible to list, the bedroom is Durham Furniture, a name you can trust. The rug and ottoman are both from Surya, a company with a Canadian office, with absolutely fabulous product with amazing customer service, but not made in Canada, so this is why I say be specific in what you are asking for. My experience has given me the opportunity to meet many of the owners, sales reps and factory workers for numerous Canadian suppliers, be confident in the fact that you are supporting some very hard working, talented and proud people.
OK so anyone who knows me will tell you I have no problem sharing my opinions. So after a lengthy career in home furnishing retail I have no doubt formed an opinion on purchasing fabric protection plans. You’ve made some choices and have bought the furniture, now your sales person throws the “would you like to buy fabric protection” at you. Most people are inclined to say no to after market warranties, so here is my thoughts please say yes to fabric protection. Why? think about it for a minute, it doesn’t cost much and it does give a stain protection on that gorgeous furniture you just paid a good buck for. Your family may know the rules about no food or drinks on the new furniture but do your guests, do you like to entertain, enjoy a glass of red wine, maybe you have children, let’s face accidents happen, why risk it. So now you want to know do these plans really work, so again in my opinion, absolutely yes. I have had the opportunity to work in different retail environments, some stores who spray the furniture before delivery and some offering a dry warranty. What is the difference, well when your furniture is sprayed the fabric is lightly misted with the fabric protection, at this point please ask if the manufacturer will still warranty the fabric against normal wear and tear, usually if there is an after market product sprayed the answer is no. However typically warranty on fabric from the manufacturer is only one year, and in 28 years of furniture retail I have never had a complaint on the fabric wearing out in just one year. To add to that, typically fabric stain protection is 5 years against stains, so weigh it out are you more likely to wear out the fabric in a year, or more likely to get a stain on it in 5 years. Now lets discuss dry warranty, usually it has the same coverage, there is just no spaying of the furniture, ask your sales person about this option every store has their own services they provide. Let me tell you why I am a fan, I have seen a one year old get sauce on a brand new ottoman, it was 100% replaced when the stain did not come out, I have had a client with that infamous red wine stain on the arm of a one day old white tufted sofa, completely replaced, I have even seen a corner piece to sectional stained 3 years after purchase, the fabric was no longer available and the whole sectional was replaced. To sum it all up, please say yes to the fabric stain protection when it is offered to you, you will not regret it. Oh and just in case you are wondering where this fabulous room scene is from, it is made by Robin Bruce.
